THE CYCLE
Jupiter and Saturn’s orbit form a 20 year cycle from conjunction to conjunction, repeating in the same element for roughly 200 years.
A 200 year in the Earth element completed on December 2020 when the most recent conjunction occurred at 0 Aquarius, launching a new 200 year series in Air signs. (A preliminary conjunction in Air took place in Libra in 1980, a pre-cursor to the current Air cycle).
The next conjunction will occur @ 17 LIBRA (Air) in October 2040. We can break down the current twenty year cycle (2020 to 2040) into the sequence of aspects the two planets will be forming to one another.
In 2024/25, the opening square occurred in Gemini/Pisces and Cancer/Aries, and later between 2029 and 2031, the opposition will take place in Taurus/Scorpio and Gemini/Sagittarius.
Currently from late 2025 to 2027, we are moving into the trine phase. In November, Jupiter in Cancer will come to an almost exact trine to Saturn in Pisces (half a degree off), and subsequently form exact trines in Leo – Aries in the course of the next 18 months.
THE MEANING
Jupiter and Saturn are known to be opposites in their influence; for example, they represent the dichotomies of expansion versus contraction, indulgence versus discipline, or will-power versus conformity. Notwithstanding, they are both considered Social Planets because, as a unit, they represent social order and role models, capturing how we lead our lives in the greater context of society.
We all live by Jupiter and Saturn’s guidance, as they represent our teachers, mentors, parental figures, and from a psychological point of view, our cultural conditioning (conscious or unconscious). Everything we believe to be right or wrong, informing what we go by and the actions we take, is represented by the two gas giants.

When a new cycle of Jupiter and Saturn aligns, the whole year brings significant changes of leadership. On a personal level, we can experience a milestone in our life, whether it relates to family, personal development, or vocation. On some occasions, we may lose a parent or mentor, prompting us to take on new roles. On a global level, new milestones may occur in the social order around us as a result of adjustments and change of leadership.
Because Jupiter and Saturn serve as our moral compass, what we interpret to be right and wrong, controversies and ethical debates often arise when they come into aspect.
In the year 2000 (conjunction in Taurus), the US saw the end of Clinton years and the rise of the Bush years. The presidential election that year was tainted by serious controversy over voting counts in the state of Florida, which Al Gore did not legally contest.
Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic stepped down after years of dictatorship in the Balkans. The second Palestinian intifada uprising began in Israel and occupied territories, after attempts for peace collapsed. On a cultural front, music band Coldplay began their massive chart domination career. This conjunction also marked the beginning of new era legalizing same sex marriage around the world, with the Netherlands spearheading the movement in 2001.
In the year 2020 -21 (conjunction in Aquarius), in the aftermath of the global covid pandemic crisis and the Black Lives Matter uprising, a change of leadership occurred in the United States with Joe Biden defeating Trump, exploding in a controversy when the latter refusing to accept defeat, galvanized an insurrection at the Capitol which lead to brutal assault and numerous deaths. Considerable questions about the integrity of these actions, as well as voting protocols, were capturing Jupiter/Saturn’s essence in full force.
Since this conjunction was in the sign of Aquarius, representing technology and science, the anti-vaccination movement gained traction questioning official science (Aquarius)—raising debates whether the science is legit or being politically weaponized? Other controversies arose with questions about the ethical uses of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where concerns surged about plagiarism of content creators and the risk of a machine takeover over of civilization.
The indulgence of Jupiter and contraction of Saturn lead to a constant negotiation between the impulse for growth and ethical consideration about possible abuses.
THE SQUARE
In the course of 2024, Jupiter in Gemini made its first waxing square to Saturn in Pisces. Subsequently, in June 2025, Jupiter moved to 0 Cancer and squared Saturn at 0 Aries, important Cardinal degrees.
In Canada, Justin Trudeau stepped down while newcomer, Mark Carney rose and won the elections.
Interestingly, US elections were again in the zeigtgeist, with two leadership changes: first Kamala Harris emerging as a surprise Democratic candidate for the presidential elections when Joe Biden stepped down, and second, the victory of Republican candidate Donald Trump for a second term; both Kamala and Donald were born with a waxing Jupiter/Saturn square, mirroring the transit. Donald Trump’s second term has been so far marred with controversy over his increasingly authoritarian stance, weaponization of leadership for personal vendetta, and the erosion of free-speech and civil liberties, spurring two massive “No King” protests in June and October 2025.
Additionally, in June and October 2025, critical changes in world order unfolded as the US launched a surgical attack on Iran’s nuclear arsenal, and a comprehensive cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas was signed under Trump’s leadership.

In the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas massacre, Israel retaliatary military campaign grew increasingly controversial as its abuse of force and tolerance of colateral damage of civilian casualties stirred protest, anger, and defiance around the world. Yet, the disconnect between lay people demanding investigation, a cease-fire, and accountability, and between leaders around the world remaining silent or cooperative on such accounts, captured the intense controversy of the Jupiter/Saturn square: Jupiter pushing limits while Saturn demanding accountability.

TRINES
Trines are often glamorized by astrologers who associate them with stress free development. However, reality seldom confirms such positivity as any aspects, trines or squares, always bring a challenge of integration.
